Q1. Does Write-On recognize handwriting and convert it to computer readable text?
No. Write-On does not perform optical handwriting recognition. Its use in forensic applications precludes introducing the level of errors currently generated by optical character recognition software. In order to meet this high standard, it is recommended that the transcript be manually typed or imported from a text file.
Q2. As a Forensic Document Examiner my time is valuable. Is there another way to deal with the task of typing the transcript?
Yes. Consider that this portion of the process is not document examination. It is clerical work and, as such, can be delegated to office staff. Some clients may also be prepared to provide a file containing the typed transcript of submitted documents. As another alternative, there are forensic firms that offer transcription services using scanned images of the documents.
Q3. Can I use Write-On in languages other than English?
Yes. Write-On has been successfully used in cases involving non-English languages. The language must, however, utilize the Latin alphabet (also called the Roman alphabet). This currently includes more than two hundred languages.
Q4. Do I have to be a Forensic Document Examiner to use Write-On?
No. While Write-On has been designed to be an extremely powerful tool for document examiners, in a broader sense it was constructed to serve anyone seeking to document, record and examine image-based information. Such applications may include, for example, law enforcement agencies gathering information on hold-up/ransom notes, counterfeit prevention and tracking applications, the maintenance of a shoe print or tire tread impression database, stamp collectors, etc. The versatility of Write-On's architecture means that its application is limited only by the user's imagination.
Q5. I own an Apple computer. Can I use Write-On?
Yes and no. While there is not currently an Apple version of Write-On, modern Apple computers are able to run Windows in many different configurations. This allows you to run Windows-only applications, like Write-On, without giving up your preferred platform.
Q6. There are several document examiners in our laboratory. Do we need to purchase a copy of Write-On for each examiner?
Pikaso Software is familiar with the working environment of many forensic laboratories. In order to facilitate the needs of a multi-user workplace, multiple "seats" or "chairs" can be purchased under a site license at a discounted rate.
